What is the best free alternative to Power BI for Mac?

Metabase is the strongest option among free Power BI alternatives for Mac users. The open-source edition is completely free to self-host, runs on macOS natively as a Java application, and includes a visual query builder, unlimited dashboards, and 20+ database connectors without any license fee. If you don't want to self-host, Metabase Cloud starts at $100/month. Apache Superset is another free browser-only option for Mac users, though it requires more technical setup.

Can you use Power BI on Ubuntu or Linux?

Not natively. Power BI Desktop is a Windows-only application. Microsoft offers the Power BI web service, which works in any browser, but it requires a paid Power BI Pro or Premium license and does not include the full report-authoring experience available in Desktop. If you need full BI authoring on Linux, alternatives such as Metabase, Apache Superset, and Agent Builder by Thesys work on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions through the browser with no Windows required.

Is there an AI-powered BI tool that doesn't require DAX?

Yes. Agent Builder by Thesys uses a natural language to visualization approach where you type questions in plain English and get interactive charts and reports back. There is no DAX, SQL, or formula language to learn. You connect your data sources, and the AI agent handles the query and visualization steps. It is not a replacement for a full enterprise BI platform, but for teams that want fast, interactive analytics without the learning curve, it is a direct AI-powered Power BI alternative.
